Monnickendam Town hall

The buildings of Museumhuizen Focus are open a few times a month. Here you won’t see a completely furnished building, but smaller exhibitions focusing on a specific point of interest within the town hall.

Ornate plasterwork, guilded woodwork and large fireplaces reflect the atmosphere in Monnickendam’s old town hall. The great hall with gold floral leather wallpaper makes a striking impression, and the large magnificent staircase is absolutely an eye catcher. When you enter this building, it’s hard to believe you are not in one of the Amsterdam Grand Canal houses.

A wall to remember!

The golden floral wallpaper, covered with intertwined branches, leaves and flowers is absolutely breath taking. You rarely see an all-over design so that not one place is emphasized over the rest of the room. The golden leather strips all link together from floor to ceiling. It is almost certain that this was produced by the wallpaper factory, Nicolaas Blankert.

Mind-boggling beauty

The hall, staircase and two attic rooms are richly decorated with supreme quality rococo plasterwork and woodwork from 1746. The circular oval staircase goes from the basement all the way up to the top of the building.

De personificatie van de stad MonnickendamThe patron of Monnickendam

In 1814, the 17th century statue of a monk was placed as patron of Monnickendam. This statue was taken from the old town hall and placed prominently on the top of the building.

The intricate details on the gold leather wallpaper are so amazing! Nobody decorates their rooms with this kind of wallpaper anymore, which makes you appreciate it even more.
